About the Opportunity

The Senior Technical Advisor (STA) is a key member of the Monitoring Priority Area (MPA). Working closely with the MPA Director, the STA serves as a critical link between COSIA, its member companies and key partner organizations that participate in the Oil Sands Monitoring Program (OSM). This opportunity will provide the STA the ability to work closely with environmental technology experts from partner organizations, as well as across a variety of thematic environmental areas within the OSM Program. 

About the Role: Senior Technical Advisor

COSIA participates in OSM as an industry representative at the governance level, sharing OSM monitoring data and supporting the development of scientific plans for new and ongoing initiatives. COSIA participation in OSM is managed through an MPA Steering Committee. The MPA STA supports the Director and the Steering Committee, which is made up of COSIA member company representatives.   
The MPA works to ensure the efficient and effective operation of OSM, impactful annual regional reporting (through technical and program management) and the continuous improvement of regional environmental monitoring initiatives.
The Senior Technical Advisor role provides an opportunity to engage with a wide range of stakeholders, to help advance environmental innovations and to play a role in shaping effective regional monitoring efforts.

Key Accountabilities:

Technical and scientific input and project management

•    Technical support to the Director and Steering Committee, including the assessment of manuscripts, study results and data and the development of recommendations and follow-up
•    Project management support for MPA studies and activities
•    Preparation of reports, briefs, presentations and other information as needed, to support the MPA steering committee and other COSIA groups
•    Assessment of technologies, approaches, best practices and knowledge gaps in the pursuit of regional monitoring performance goals
•    Assists with the identification of regional monitoring priorities for the oil sands, encompassing both onsite and regional cumulative effects monitoring
•    Supports the MPA Director in providing information for COSIA communications activities
•    Participates in continuous improvement efforts to help reduce redundancy in regional monitoring efforts and data management

Management, Administration, and Facilitation 

•    Coordination of MPA activities and the development and updating of a strategy and action plan
•    Maintenance of a risk registry and priority area plans
•    Engagement with stakeholders within and outside of industry
•    Participation in workshop design and facilitation, including the preparation of materials and presentations

Education and Experience: 


•    Post-secondary education in science, technology, engineering and/or management with a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in, or working with, industry, government, and/or multi-stakeholder program management
•    A demonstrated ability to work with multiple parties and stakeholders to develop and implement projects and initiatives with successful outcomes
•    Excellent oral and written communication skills that includes public speaking
•    Demonstrated planning and organizational skills

•    Influence the decisions of senior leaders 
•    Articulate the value proposition of innovative ideas so that members are aligned and prepared to move them forward

•    Strong relationship management skills, including the ability to build relationships at all levels of stakeholder organizations (e.g. from field-based staff through to senior leaders) 
•    Strong interpersonal skills

•    Able to manage timelines, structure and focus while also increasing efficiency 
•    Able to lead and maintain effective oversight of multiple projects simultaneously

Compensation: Competitive compensation based on skill set and experience. Assignments or secondments from member companies are possible.
