TRAINING OLD MICROBES TO DO NEW TRICKS
MATHIJS MARTENS

Like many industries, the oil sands require the use of water. Once the water is used, it must be treated for the removal of organics before it can be returned to nature. For Mathjis and his team, they saw this as an opportunity to explore an exciting new idea: the use of microbes to target and treat water. They got to work, developed their technology, founded a start-up company and submitted their innovation to the COSIA E-TAP portal. Their innovation of specially selected and trained microbes is now being tested for use in treating water used in oil sands operations.

On Watch For Wildlife
Virgil Hawkes

Knowledge, as they say, is power. For teams working to ensure the process of land reclamation is successful, monitoring is an incredibly important – and sizable – task. Undaunted by the scale and motived by his passion, Virgil Hawkes developed a new way to monitor a significantly large amount of land. This helps provide a more accurate picture of how wildlife returns to disturbed areas and fills important knowledge gaps in land management practices.

From Waste To Water
Mangrove Water Technologies

Bitumen extraction uses water – and in doing so, typically creates an equal amount of wastewater full of salt in return. For the team of innovators at Mangrove Water Technologies, they saw this challenge as an opportunity. With that in mind, they’ve developed a new technology that uses an electrical current to separate the salts into different compounds. Or, in other words, removes the waste and provides clean, fresh water that can be pumped back into the system.

SOMETHING NEW UNDER THE SUN
FRANK GU

Water is used heavily in the oil sands, and without a reliable way to clean the process water, a continuous supply is required. When Frank Gu heard COSIA’s call to innovators for new solutions to the problem, he stepped up and created an exciting idea that uses sunlight to power a technology he called SolarPass to treat the water and allow it to be reused.

BECOME A HERO OF TOMORROW

STEP 1 - FIND AN OPPORTUNITY

Innovation isn’t just the territory of the established. Innovation is open to anyone who has ever wondered “what if” and searched for a way to transform it into “what is.” If you have a great idea that aligns with one of our innovation opportunities, we’re all ears. First step? Find an opportunity for which you’ve got an idea, technology or approach to share.

STEP 2 - DO YOUR HOMEWORK

The process of innovation is an unpredictable and exciting journey, and preparation is an incredible foundation for innovation heroics. Explore innovation resources and research below that just may help you come up with the next big thing.

STEP 3 - MAKE IT OFFICIAL

You’ve found an opportunity. You’ve done the research. You’ve even got a big idea. Now’s the time to make it official. Submit your innovation with the simple form on our E-TAP (Environmental Technology Assessment Portal) page and show us what you’ve got! Our teams will review the idea, and if it has the potential to work for one of our partners, we’ll get in touch and discuss the next steps.
